Johnny Famous
In this exciting new interactive narrative experiment, you play the role of Johnny, an average kid living in Middletown, USA. He goes to school, hangs out with friends, and loves to eat pizza. Johnny's major goal in life is to become the most popular kid in school.
When Johnny gets a new computer he discovers the wide world of Web 2.0. He learns how to blog, flame, build websites, and even participate in online gaming communities.
Soon, Johnny's goal of being the most popular kid in school looks modest in comparison to his new goal: become the most popular kid on the planet. As Johnny, that is your goal: to become the most popular kid on the planet. Using a mix of traditional and digital social networking tools, you attempt to become super famous.
In the game you earn Popularity Points by performing social acts. You can talk to people, make friends, bully younger and weaker kids, or utilize your computer to connect to people online. You have a limited number of Action Points each day to spend on performing social acts, so choose carefully. As time goes by, you realize that you get more Popularity Points by blogging, podcasting, and frequenting online forums than you do by hanging out with friends and going to school. The intent of the project is that eventually you, the player, realize that to make Johnny famous, you completely stop interacting with people in Johnny's real world because it does not net you as many popularity points as participating in online communities does. It requires so much time and effort to connect to people online that you cannot reach your full potential in both the real and digital worlds, so you are forced to choose one or the other. In the game, players are encouraged to choose the digital one as it more interestingly exposes the problem. In-game footage:
