Models of Surveillance Rhetoric in Movie Title Sequences

Written for a Movie Title Sequences class in the fall of 2007, this essay investigates the use of surveillance in film narratives and title sequences, looking specifically at Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation (1974), Tony Scott's Enemy of the State (1998), and Steven Spielberg's Minority Report (2002). I discuss the history of surveillance theory and then outline a general "Surveillance Rhetoric" that is frequently used in Hollywood cinema.

Disguising Subjective Narrative in the Battle of Algiers

Written for the third class in a Film History series, in this essay I look at how Gillo Pontecorvo's film, The Battle of Algiers (1966), negotiates the space between objective truth and subjective storytelling, focusing specifically on Pontecorvo's use of special film stock and processing methods.
